The Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) is the professional organization for technicians and technologists in the Province of Alberta and in the Canadian Territories. Alberta is the first province to give applied science and engineering technology professionals belonging to ASET the right to self-regulate, and its P.Tech. members the right to practice engineering independently, within a defined scope of practice.
ASET evaluates the qualifications of individuals who voluntarily apply for certification, and issues professional credentials accordingly, based on national standards related to education, experience and professionalism. As a self-regulating professional association, ASET ensures public safety with a responsibility to guarantee the qualifications of those holding ASET titles and protect against title misuse, and the ability to exercise disciplinary and legal action to ensure competence of ASET members.
Technicians and technologists are integral members of the engineering team, involved in the application of technology, either hands-on or design and analysis. ASET membership consists of approximately 18,000 individuals, including full-time technology students, recent graduates and fully certified members representing a wide range of sectors essential to this province including chemical, civil, drafting, electrical, environmental, geological, mechanical, instrumentation and oil and gas.
